Tips to Keep Your Rental Home Warm This Winter

Seal Drafts and Insulate

One of the easiest ways to keep the cold out is by sealing drafts around doors and windows.

  • Use weather stripping tape, which is inexpensive, easy to install and simple to remove when you move. Before installing, be sure to test any weather-stripping product to make sure it doesn’t remove paint or leave sticky, hard-to-clean residue.
  • For a quick DIY fix, roll up socks or towels and place them under drafty doors to block the chill.
  • Using thick, insulated curtains can also help keep warm air in and cold air out.

Maximize Natural Heat

Take advantage of sunny days by opening blinds and curtains to let in natural light and warmth. Even during winter, the sun can raise indoor temperatures noticeably! Once the sun sets, close your curtains to retain the warmth you’ve gathered throughout the day.

Add Cozy Layers

Add warmth (and style!) to your home by layering cozy accents. A thick rug in the living room or bedroom can help insulate chilly floors while adding a touch of comfort. Keep soft throws and blankets within easy reach on your couch or bed, too. They not only create an inviting atmosphere but also keep you snug without having to use your heating system.

Utilize Smart Home Technology

If your home has smart devices like a thermostat, take full advantage of them to optimize heating. Smart thermostats allow you to schedule heating patterns, ensuring your home is warm when you’re there and conserving energy when you’re not.

Block the Chill with Furniture Placement

Strategically arranging your furniture can make a big difference in retaining warmth. Place bookcases, sofas or other furniture pieces against exterior walls to help insulate your space. Be sure not to block exit ways, heat vents or radiators, as this can restrict airflow and reduce heating efficiency.

Staying warm this winter doesn’t have to be complicated. With these rental-friendly strategies, you can create a cozy, inviting and comfortable home to enjoy throughout the season.
