Think about the future
Let’s face it – moving isn’t the most fun activity on the planet. That’s why it’s important to think through your needs now and in a few years so you only have to do it once. Start with location. Do you want to be close to the airport for traveling? Or, would you prefer an active adult community? Do you want to stay in state or finally retire in Florida.

Bedroom count is another big one. Do you really need one for each child or can they share? Also, would you prefer a one-story or two-story home as the maintenance can differ.

Declutter your home
Now is the time to make the distinction between sentimental memories and random clutter. For example, you probably don’t need those old cleats from the time Johnny played soccer in the third grade, but you may want the trophy he won for being the MVP.

The best way to get started is to make a plan and go through your home room by room making a keepsake box. When your kids come to visit, ask them to go through the box from their room and determine what they want to keep or toss.

Take inventory of your furniture

Depending upon the size of your new rental home, you may not have room for all of your furniture, artwork or décor pieces. If you are unsure about whether or not a piece you love will look right in your new home, bring it along just in case. If it doesn’t work then you can always sell or donate it.
