8 Ways to Protect Your Home While You’re Away

Summer is right around the corner and we hope you have a fabulous vacation planned (or several!). Before you leave, here are 8 easy ways to keep your home safe while you’re gone.

Lock all doors and windows
Double and triple check all bedroom windows, front and back doors, and the garage are locked. If you have a gate, it’s a good idea to check that this is locked as well.

Adjust your thermostat
Typically, you can set your thermostat to vacation mode which will save money on utility bills.

Unplug electronics and non-major appliances
Accidents such as a power outage can happen at any time. Protect your home and belongings by unplugging electronics and non-major appliances like the toaster or blender.

Leave a living room lamp on a timer
Having a light on will give the illusion that you are home, and therefore, deter potential thieves.

Discard all trash into the proper bins
Avoid coming back to a smelly home by removing all trash before you leave. If you have dirty dishes in the dishwasher then you’ll want to run it through a cycle as well.

Ask a trusted neighbor for help
If you feel comfortable, it’s always a good idea to ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your home and report and suspicious activity. Additionally, they may be kind enough to pick up your mail while you’re gone.

Switch expected deliveries
Speaking of mail, if you have packages arriving while you’re away it’s a good idea to update the delivery information so that they are held at the facility instead of sitting on your doorstep.

Beware of social media
While you’re off having an amazing time, resist the urge to share photos on social media as you don’t always know who is following you. A thief may see you’re away and use it as an opportunity to break in.

Bonus tip: If you’re away when rent and utility payments are due, be sure to setup bank account auto-pay or even text-to-pay.
