How To

Six Safety Tips for Deep Frying Turkey

Deep frying your turkey can yield delicious results. However, the process itself can be dangerous if the proper precautions aren’t taken.

Before getting started on your Thanksgiving dinner, make note of these safety tips:

  1. Thaw and dry the turkey
Excess water from the turkey could cause the oil to bubble and spill over, resulting in a fire.
  2. Stay clear of the house
Set up the turkey fryer at least 10 feet away from your home, and keep children and pets away from the area.
  3. Find Flat Ground
Place the fryer on a flat, level surface. Gauge the weight and size of the turkey then carefully add enough oil to accommodate, but not cause the fryer to overflow once the turkey is placed inside.
  4. Monitor the temperature and cooking time
Use caution when touching the fryer as the lid and handle can become very hot. Be sure to keep track of the oil’s temperature with a special deep fryer gauge, and pay close attention to cooking times.
  5. Be Prepared
Have a fire extinguisher (multipurpose, dry-powder) ready at all times. Call 911 immediately and notify your Property Manager in the event that damages occurs.
  6. Never leave the turkey fryer unattended
Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye.Need a recipe? Check out this one from Food Network. Share your recipes by tagging us @progressresidential on social media.
