Out with the old, in with the clean, organized and fashionable! Follow these 4 tips to create the closet of your dreams.
1. Empty It Out
The first step is to take every single thing out of the closet: clothes, hangers, shoes, purses (seriously, everything). The key to organization is to start with an empty slate.
Next, separate all of your clothes, shoes, purses, etc. into piles: keep, toss and donate. As hard as it may be, you have to be strict with your “keep” items. We can all fall into the mindset of “I haven’t worn this in 5 years but I will start wearing it more often.” If you haven’t worn something in more than a year, and it is in good condition, donate it to someone who would love to wear it frequently! The “toss” pile is only for truly ragged, worn-out clothes that are not able to be donated.
3. Clean Your Closet
Since your closet is now empty, it’s the perfect time to disinfect, dust, vacuum and wipe down all the surfaces of your closet. Grab some 409 disinfectant spray and get to scrubbing! Now your closet is truly clean and ready to hold all of your favorite and most-worn “keep” items.
4. Organize and Put Away
Now that you’ve decided which clothes and shoes you cannot part with, it’s time to put everything back into the closet – but in an organized fashion. It is up to you whether you decide to invest in shelving units so that you can keep your pants folded instead of on hangers, or keep your shoes in separate cubbies within your closet. This 10-Pocket Organizer and this 4-Tier Rack are great options for adding more shelving space. However, you can certainly keep your closet organized just with hangers.
Hang all of your pants, t-shirts, dresses and then keep each shoe of a pair together and next to each other, either on the floor or on a built-in shelf of the closet. We recommend keeping your pants and jeans in one section, casual t-shirts in another, formal dresses in another, and so on.
