Attention, thrill seekers! Summer is the best time to get your scream on as you travel to the highest rated amusement parks nationwide. If you think the more loops the better, or would prefer to not be upside down while traveling at fast speeds, these popular parks have something for everyone. Whether you visit one close to home or decide to include a few in your summer road trip, here’s our list of the top amusement parks!
Cedar Point – Sandusky, Ohio
With a reputation of the “Roller Coaster Capital of the World,” this park definitely makes our list. Trust us, once you see pictures of the Wicked Twister, Dragster or Millennium Force, you will understand. Just to prove our point, the Top Thrill Dragstar takes riders up 420 feet into the air at 120 mph, and Millennium Force is still ranked as one of the world’s best steel coasters and offers amazing views of surrounding Lake Erie.
Six Flags Magic Mountain – Valencia, California
This popular Southern California park has 19 terrifying – I mean, fun – roller coasters to choose from, including X2, Green Lantern, Superman: Escape from Krypton, and the Viper, which is a constantly looping coaster that takes you down a snake-like course at 70 mph. Don’t worry, there are plenty of family and kid-friendly rides to choose from too!
Hersheypark – Hershey, Pennsylvania
The famous headquarters of Hershey’s Chocolate also has one of the highest rated amusement parks. The 13 roller coasters weave in and out of the park, leaving you impressed by the rides “The Sweetest Place on Earth” offers.
Carowinds – Charlotte, North Carolina
Straddling the North Carolina and South Carolina border, this 398-acre amusement park offers a variety of thrilling rides and scream-invoking roller coasters. We do not suggest riding the “Hurler” after lunch.
Six Flags Over Texas – Arlington, Texas
You’ll be head over heels (literally) for this popular Texas amusement park. From the newly opened The Joker to the popular Batman coaster, or the record-setting Shock Wave, there are plenty to choose from if you are looking for the ultimate thrill.
Busch Gardens – Tampa Bay, Florida
While there are only 6 coasters at this park, they are sure to get your adrenaline pumping. Our favorites are Kumba, Cobra’s Curse and Montu – which takes you through seven intense inversions. We wish you luck!
A Little Less Thrilling:
Holiday World – Santa Claus, Indiana
This very family-friendly park offers four themed lands celebrating the holidays of Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving and the 4th of July. With free parking, sunscreen and soda, you can’t go wrong at Holiday World. There are plenty of scream-worthy rides as well as an amazing water park, which was included on our Top Water Parks to Visit blog post.
Dollywood – Pigeon Forge, Tennessee
With more than 40 rides to choose from, this family-friendly park has everything from roller coasters to Ziplining and children’s rides inspired by barnyard animals. This park is often highly ranked for its variety of rides and attractions.
