New Year, even better you! Just the thought of improving your eating habits can be daunting though. However, with a few easy tips you can easily get in shape and start feeling great.
Here are a few ways to eat healthier this year:
Plan your meals ahead
Make a grocery list and stick to it! Layout your week and plan the ingredients that you need for each meal. This way, you have everything you need and can avoid opting for takeout.
Cut out the sugar
Between candy and sugar drinks, you could be consuming more calories than you think. Stick to healthy alternatives like water, naturally sweetened teas and fruit to hit your sweet tooth.
Eat more fruits and veggies
Eating fruits and vegetables can protect against cancer, heart disease and boost your immune system. Plus, you can have a larger portion as they contain healthy fats and starches.
Measure your portions
Two basic rules to live by are to stop eating when you’re full and measure your portions. A scale is a great way to ensure accuracy, but there a few general ways to measure one portion:
Fruit: the size of tennis ball
Vegetables: size of a fist
Starch (pasta, potatoes, rice): the size of a fist
Protein: the size of a palm
Instead of reaching for a bag of chips, opt for healthy treats like nuts, fruit and hummus. Avoid temptation by keeping this snack in your bag or desk at work.
